What is an x-ray in Dentistry?

X-rays in dentistry is very helpful in the field of dental X-rays, since it is able to provide images of the inner parts of the tooth, which are usually hidden by the gums and the tissue. X-rays can be used for checking the health of your teeth and to prevent decay. We will now discuss what is x-ray in dentistry.

X-rays in dentistry allow you to view all the structures of your teeth. It also helps in the identification and localization of the decayed teeth. Through this method, the dentist is also able to assess whether or not you have any sensitivity or pain in your teeth and mouth. The image that you are able to see through this method can also be used as reference in diagnosing problems in the root canal, the periapical placement and other parts of the gum.

The X-ray machine uses radiation. Radio waves and gamma rays are used since they do not cause any harmful side effects on the bone tissues around the teeth. It only generates a minimal amount of radiation which is enough to pinpoint any bones and soft tissue areas. Radio waves are not effective if the bone or the soft tissues around it is damaged.

X-rays in dentistry are most commonly used in the detection of tooth decay. Teeth accumulate plaque and bacteria as time goes by. Plaque affects the shape and size of the tooth and when this happens, there is a greater chance that the tooth can collapse. If the root of the tooth is exposed, then this can also weaken and cause the teeth to fall out. Plaque can also affect the nerves and bones of the gum.

There are various types of radiographs that can be used in X-rays in dentistry. Single-pulse X-rays and dual-pulse X-rays are the two types that are commonly used. The main difference between these two radiographs is the length of the x-ray image that one receives. The duration is measured in seconds and it is usually long enough for the dentist to take complete details about the condition of the teeth and the gums. Patients who suffer from severe dental diseases such as decayed teeth or those that are broken or fractured require more prolonged exposure to the radiograph.

The type of x-ray that you will receive depends on the dentist and on your case. The most common type is the computed tomography or CTx which is more commonly known as a computed radiography. This type of x-ray is required for patients who have problems with their teeth alignment or if their gums are bleeding. This x-ray is very helpful for finding abnormalities and infections in bones. A high resolution x-ray is used in the detection of tumors and diseases of the lymph nodes.
